Description
What happens when college fight songs become the starting point for a jazz ensemble? Across the Field brings university traditions into a new musical setting, pairing familiar melodies with original arrangements and improvisation.
The project began in summer 2023, when the Timeless Music Project approached tenor saxophonist Garrett Fasig and trumpeter Sam Butler with the idea. Together, they developed arrangements for their Visions Ensemble that kept the recognizable tunes at the center while exploring new musical possibilities.
Following an October 2023 premiere at the SILO Club in Indianapolis, the project moved toward a recording in Bloomington, Indiana. The collection grew to 13 arrangements, including a selection featuring guest trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, who had also shared arranging and performance advice with the ensemble.
This CD features 13 full-length selections arranged by Butler and Fasig, including “Tiger Rag,” “Indiana, Our Indiana,” “Rocky Top,” and “Across the Field.” For alumni, college sports fans, and jazz listeners, it offers a fresh way to enjoy melodies closely tied to school memories and traditions.
